I had a hell of a time decided what genre to stick this, but decided since Drama and Comedy are the big 2, that it would have to be between those.
This movie is totally whacked.
Some comments om IMdB remark about the bad quality of it's FX.
Please! The movie apparently is suppose to be 'cheap' in all it's form. I'd go so far as to say it's walking the line to making fun of science fiction.
A couple of hundred years into the future, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), NYC taxi cab driver in all his glory (natch) snares an Orange haired beauty who is innocent, barely dressed and a savior of the world. The Orange haired savior (The Fifth Element, Leeloo) played by Milla Jojovich, was cloned into life by the powers that be. So unwilling Willis battles the evil Zorg (Gary Oldman) and helps solve the mystery with the aid of a Priest Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm) and whacky entertainer, Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker).
Is Ruby gay, bi or what?
He wears a big 'hair phallic' in some scenes. And speaking of hair and rip offs,
The Fifth Element apparently stole it's ideas for benign aliens from the lizard Nazis in The Mario Bros (there are other Nazi references here that remind you of same said movie), the Twilek design and Leis hair buns from George Lucas. Well, who doesn't borrow the bun design when they are making a parody?
George Lucas, in return, stole the idea of the traffic scene on Coruscant from The Fifth Element, there's no doubt in my mind because the falling through traffic idea is just too cool to pass up.
The whole costumery is obviously crazy, yet effective and fits the movie. Oldman's Zorg hairdo and plastic skull cap is a scream.
Look at it this way. Willis, Oldman, Holm? What are they doing in a movie like this? Don't take it seriously and you'll enjoy.
