I finally saw this all the way through a few days ago. I liked it. It's the kind of optimistic science fiction that's too rare these days for my liking.
I call it science fiction because the unusual things happening in the movie were attributed to beings from a different planet, rather than to magic. In the movie, a group of elderly men who are friends and regularly sneak a swim in a nearby pool, find themselves feeling younger and being healthier when some new people in town rent the house and pool and begin placing rocklike objects under the water.
{Don't read this paragraph if you plan to see the movie.} In time, they discover that the new people are from another planet, and that they're rescuing some of their species who had to be left behind in the rocklike cocoons underwater at a much earlier time. The aliens turn out to be kindly people who let the elderly people continue to use the pool. Unfortunately, when some more elderly people discover the effects of the water, they mob the pool and disrupt the energy that's helping the cocoon people return to life. Then the original pool trespassers help return the cocoons to the ocean to remain dormant until a later time. The kindly aliens have a final gift to offer as they leave the planet.
This 1985 movie stars Wilford Brimley, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, and other famous older actors and actresses.
Entertainment rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
