Like the Fifth Element, another comedy walking the line to making fun of Science Fiction.
John Canyon (Dennis Hopper, who else?) is one of the last independent space truckers hauling cargo amongst the planets who is ultimately talked into hauling a secret cargo that contains, unbeknownst to him, a lethal army of disintegrator robots, created to take over the Earth.
*** Spoilerish
This movie is clever and fun in that it utilizes campy future scenarios inspired by nowaday real life scenes. Things like docking lanes in space lined with billboards, genetically engineered square pigs from Mars (that no one wants to eat), and your classic choke and puke diner (which recycles all the uneaten food) complete with diner babe played by Debi Mazar. It also uses the old west and 70's type trucker movies themes well. There are old fashioned Zero G punches, western style brawls and shootouts and fancy space driving to elude the cops.
The space pirates are led by the Macanudo (Charles Dance) who is your typical peg-legged, one-eyed evil half robot man reminiscent of Darth Vader, except Macanudo, since he is a fully reconstructed male (which includes his private parts), has an interesting fascination with the "dicks" of his prisoners. Now, don't get the wrong idea, it's all in great camp fun, but you just gotta see the part where Macanudo attempts to seduce our diner babe heroine with his "low amp, electrical wang pulse guaranteed to drive women crazy."
Dance gets all the good lines, btw.
"If I had an anus, I'd probably soil myself."
What can I say, I like camp humor? *snicker*
